As of Sept. 4, Benedict XVI becomes the oldest pope in history.

He breaks the previous record held by Pope Leo XIII, who lived 93 years, four months and three days.

However, Leo XIII holds the record of the longest reigning pope, because Benedict is pope emeritus.

The data was calculated by the Italian magazine “Famiglia Cristiana.”

It is more complicated to know who held the record for the youngest pope. The title is disputed among three pontiffs of the 10th and 11th centuries: John XI, John XII, and Benedict IX. All three were around 20 years old.
