Pope Francis Names 21 New Cardinals, Including Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego…

Five are over the age of 80: Archbishop Jorge Enrique Jiménez Carvajal, Archbishop Emeritus of Cartagena (Colombia). Archbishop Lucas Van Looy sdb, Archbishop Emeritus of Ghent (Belgium). Archbishop Arrigo Miglio, Archbishop Emeritus of Cagliari (Italy). Father Gianfranco Ghirlanda sj (Italy). Monsignor Fortunato Frezza (Italy). Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has created 101 cardinals from 58 countries at seven consistories. The last consistory to create new cardinals took place on Nov. 28, 2020. The new cardinals included Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington and Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, the Preacher to the Papal Household since 1980. Immediately following the 2020 consistory, Pope Francis had appointed 73 of the members of the College of Cardinals eligible to vote a futur...

The Ascension takes the training wheels off our faith…

COMMENTARY: Christ’s ascension is meant to help us to grow to full stature in Christ, as we respond to his confidence in making us his missionaries, together with the Holy Spirit, to renew the face of the earth. The celebration of the Ascension of the Lord is an annual opportunity for us not only to focus on heaven, where the Lord Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us (John 14:1-6) and on the joy that “eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor the human heart conceived,” which “God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9; Is 64:4), but also on the implications Jesus’ return to the Father means for each of his followers.  Jesus could have stayed on earth until the end of time as the Good Shepherd, crisscrossing the globe after every lost sheep, saving them one by one....

“I Love Me,” Part 2 — Even after McCarrick and Maciel, clerics like McElroy and Vérgez know that if you do the wrong thing, you might get a promotion…..

Pope Francis this morning announced the creation of 21 new cardinals, most of whom will be eligible to vote in the next papal conclave. One of them is Robert McElroy, the ultra-progressive bishop of San Diego. For Catholics who actually believe what the Catholic Church teaches, this is terrible news. And for Catholics who would like their Church to be run by men who can be trusted to do the right thing on sex abuse — well, Francis long ago showed (e.g., the Zanchetta affair) that he cannot be trusted. And here he goes again. Here’s a link to a 2016 letter that Richard Sipe, the (now-deceased) psychotherapist and foremost expert on the sexual habits of the Catholic clergy, sent to McElroy back in 2016. Excerpts: It was clear to me during our last meeting in your office, although cordial, th...

“I Love Me,” Part 1 — Even after Uvalde, good police officers and pastors know that if you do the right thing, you might have to die…

(Photo by Yasin Ozturk/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images.) It’s been years since I’ve seen Americans so united by grief and fury. The grief is for the 19 children and 2 teachers murdered at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The fury is against the police officers who waited—minute after agonizing minute—while the killer hid behind a locked classroom door.  The facts are almost too painful to recount. According to the latest timelines, at 11:33 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, the Uvalde mass shooter (I’ve adopted a practice of refusing to name spree killers) entered the school and began shooting into classroom 111 or 112. Two minutes later, at 11:35 a.m., three Uvalde officers arrived at the closed classroom door. Two were lightly wounded by gunfire from the shooter. Four more officers a...

Summer Movies 2022: Coming to a Theater Near You…

Let’s take a look at some of the big movies coming this summer. Summer is traditionally the season Hollywood releases its biggest blockbusters of the year. The thrill from the sights and sounds; the smell of movie-theater popcorn; the sense of solidarity with other moviegoers caught up in the adventure unfolding before them and returning out into the summer night transformed by the experience of going to the movies. But times have changed, and with more content available on streaming platforms, the very survival of movie theaters is in question. Summer 2022 will be a test for the future of Hollywood blockbusters — many of the new releases were completed before the COVID-19 pandemic and are now finally seeing the light of day on the big screen. Let’s take a look at some of the big movies co...

Why did He have to go? Here are 10 reasons Our Lord ascended…..

The Ascension can seem like the strangest event in the life of Christ. Some great pieces of Ascension art emphasize that strangeness, picturing a pair of feet at the top of a picture with astonished Apostles looking up at the floating figure of Christ. But if you think about it, it would have been even stranger if he stayed. Here are 10 reasons I can count. If he stayed he would be hard to reach. If Jesus remained on earth, we would probably all go on pilgrimage to see him in his bodily form at least once in our lives. It would become a great story, like a Papal encounter. But we wouldn’t meet him daily. If he stayed, this world would be the most important. It is easy to think that this world is all there is. But we are made not for this world, but the next, and we long for it until it com...

Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Former Vatican Secretary of State, Dies at 94…

He had come under criticism in the later part of his life for allegedly covering up sexual abuse by Legionaries of Christ founder Marcial Maciel, former U.S. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, and others. Juan Carlos Cruz, a clerical sex abuse survivor from Chile and member of the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, wrote on Twitter on May 28, that Cardinal Sodano “did so much harm to so many people and covered up years of abuse in Chile and the world.” Sodano was nuncio to Chile from 1977 to 1988. He also served in the nunciatures in Ecuador and Uruguay, and was secretary of the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church. At the same time as reports were coming out about Sodano’s actions on abuse in 2019, Pope Francis accepted his resignation as dean of the College o...

Pope says ‘Irish brought the whiskey, Italians brought the Mafia,’ referring to US immigrants…

ROME – Speaking about the need to welcome, accompany, promote, and integrate migrants when they arrive in a new country, Pope Francis said that when it comes to the United States, “a people of migrants,” the Irish brought the whiskey and the Italians brought the mafia. To understand migrants today, the pope said, the only thing most people have to do is look to their own roots because “most of us are children or grandchildren of migrants,” himself included, as his parents arrived in Argentina from northern Italy. Recalling a dialogue with “someone from the United States” who told him that Americans are not migrants because “we have already rooted here,” Francis repeated the answer he gave then: “Don’t lose your memory: You are a people of migrants, of Irish migrants and Italian migrants. T...

Priest-centric pastoral care is unsustainable in most parishes…

I know the title of this blog will get some people up in arms, but before you get the pitchforks out, bear with me a bit and I will try to make my argument. Before I get to the nitty-gritty, let’s examine a few facts: Fact #1 – Jesus had active discipleship relationships with 12 men at a time (maximum), during his ministry. He spent a majority of his time with these men and taught them to do the same with others.   Fact #2 – Of the Apostles we know of post-Pentecost, all of them went on to have disciples themselves. Peter had Mark. John had Ignatius of Antioch and Polycarp. Notice, they only had small numbers of others they discipled (that we know of).   Fact #3 – Most of the Church’s history had small congregations, yet today our congregations average over 1,00...

What we know about mass school shootings in the United States — and the gunmen who carry them out…

When the Columbine High School massacre took place in 1999 it was seen as a watershed moment in the United States – the worst mass shooting at a school in the country’s history. Now, it ranks fourth. The three school shootings to surpass its death toll of 13 – 12 students, one teacher – have all taken place within the last decade: 2012’s Sandy Hook Elementary attack, in which a gunman killed 26 children and school staff; the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which claimed the lives of 17 people; and now the Robb Elementary School assault in Uvalde, Texas, where on May 24, 2022, at least 19 children and two adults were murdered. We are criminologists who study the life histories of public mass shooters in the U.S. As part of that research, we built ...

Germany’s Bishop Bätzing Defends Promotion of Priest Accused of Sexual Harassment…

“Bätzing made it unmistakably clear that he disapproved of such behavior. He issued a monitio, an admonition in written form. The priest apologized for his behavior to the employee, asked for forgiveness, and showed credible remorse. He has been dealing intensively with his misconduct for years.” It went on: “After a renewed examination of the accusations and further discussions, Bishop Georg Bätzing appointed the priest as district dean of one of the 11 districts of the diocese.” “The employee’s consternation and indignation over this personnel decision are understandable. In a personal conversation with the employee, Bätzing tried to convey and explain this decision to her.” “In the appointment as district dean, both the formally disapproved misconduct of the priest and his handling of i...
