What does ‘Fiducia supplicans’ actually say? And how much weight does it have?

‘Fiducia supplicans’: What does it say? Skip to content The Vatican’s doctrinal office issued a declaration Monday addressing “the possibility of blessing couples in irregular situations and same-sex couples.” Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, pictured Sept. 30, 2023. © Mazur/cbcew.org.uk. In a preamble to the 5,000-word document Fiducia supplicans, issued Dec. 18, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández said that the text marked “a specific and innovative contribution to the pastoral meaning of blessings.” “Such theological reflection, based on the pastoral vision of Pope Francis, implies a real development from what has been said about blessings in the Magisterium and the official texts of the Church,” the prefect of the Dicastery for the ...

Is the Vatican trial finally over? In a phrase, ‘Not so fast’…

ROME – After a staggering total of 30 months, 85 hearings stretching over some 600 courtroom hours, 69 witnesses and almost 150,000 pages of documentation, the Vatican’s “Trial of the Century” reached a crescendo Saturday night with guilty verdicts against Cardinal Angelo Becciu and eight of the other nine defendants. In a sense, the results marked an early birthday present for Pope Francis, who today turns 87, and who set this whole thing in motion in April 2021 by amending the law of the Vatican City State to allow its civil tribunal to judge the cases of cardinals and bishops who work in the Vatican. So, this long day’s journey into night is finally over, right? As the saying goes, “Not so fast.” In fact, there’s not just one but multiple shoes left to drop, suggesting that the aftermat...

Pope Approves Landmark DDF Declaration ‘Fiducia Supplicans’ Allowing ‘Blessing Couples in Irregular Situations and Same-Sex Couples’…

With the Declaration “Fiducia supplicans” issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, approved by Pope Francis, it will be possible to bless same-sex couples but without any type of ritualization or offering the impression of a marriage. The doctrine regarding marriage does not change, and the blessing does not signify approval of the union. By Vatican News When two people request a blessing, even if their situation as a couple is “irregular,” it will be possible for the ordained minister to consent. However, this gesture of pastoral closeness must avoid any elements that remotely resemble a marriage rite. This is what is stated the Declaration “Fiducia supplicans” on the pastoral meaning of blessings, published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and approved by Pope...

Find Peace Amid the Holiday Hustle With This ‘O Antiphon’ Prayer Guide…

Advent can easily become a spiritual struggle when you have decorations, gifts, and Christmas preparations on your plate. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Church helps us to intensify our efforts of prayer and spiritual preparation for Christmas starting on December 17. From December 17 to the 23, the Church offers us the “O Antiphons” — short prayers that attribute Old Testament titles to Jesus and point to how they find their fulfillment in him. When you say each of these titles of Christ in Latin and put them in reverse order, the first letters reveal a hidden message and spell out the words ‘ERO CRAS’ — a Latin phrase that means, “Tomorrow, I will come.” These antiphons are recited during the Evening Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. Let us reflect on each one to grow in joyfu...

The Long, Storied Controversy Over Cheese on Apple Pie…

Apple pie is not an American invention. In the 14th century, farmers in England began wrapping apples into inedible containers known as “coffins,” a pie prototype. Only in 1697 did the concept reach the United States—through European immigrants. But the USA has laid claim to the iconic dessert, a process that was crystalized when a 1902 New York Times article lambasted an English writer for complaining that eating apple pie more than two times per week was excessive: [Twice a week] is utterly insufficient, as anyone who knows the secret of our strength as a nation and the foundation of our industrial supremacy must admit. Pie is the American synonym of prosperity, and its varying contents the calendar of changing seasons. Pie is the food of the heroic. No pie-eating people can be permanent...

Is Catholicism in Germany on the cutting edge, or on the brink?

On November 10, a “Synodal Committee” created by the recently completed German “Synodal Way” met for the first time. The committee’s mandate is to prepare the foundations for a “Synodal Council” of laity, clergy, and bishops to govern the Catholic Church in Germany from 2026 on. The idea of such a “Synodal Council” has already been rejected by the Holy See. And in a recent letter to four German laywomen who had resigned from the “Synodal Way” to protest deviations from settled Catholic truths and practices, Pope Francis reiterated that the “Synodal Council” cannot be reconciled “with the sacramental structure of the Catholic Church.” The Pope also said this about the current state of Catholic affairs in Germany: “Instead of seeking ‘salvation’ in ever new committees and discussing the same...

‘Your confessional is ready’: A Denver Catholic high school started using restaurant buzzers to help coordinate confessions, and it’s actually working…

[embedded content] By Kelly Clark & Neil McDonough  As you walk the halls of Bishop Machebeuf High School in Denver, you won’t find any lines for confession. Instead, students simply pick up a buzzer, like the ones you see at your neighborhood restaurant, and wait for it to light up.  Father CJ Mast is the Chaplain at Bishop Machebeuf. He says, “At first, it was kind of a joke we were just laughing about it. But then I think it was our principal, Mr. Siegel. He said, ‘well, let’s just go for it. If it’s a flop, it’s a flop. But it could be a great thing, and it could work out, so let’s just go for it.’”   Once the red light goes off, the students know it is their time to head to Father CJ’s office for confession. This idea came out of inspiration and prayer as Father CJ ...

Would You Rejoice If Christ Came Today?

“Rejoice always” sounds beautiful  when we hear it in Mass on the Third Sunday of Advent, Year B. Because it is beautiful. It’s Guadete Sunday; we light a pink candle and in many churches, the priest wears that same “rose” color. The Church traditionally stops holding back, a little. Many parishes will hear the organ again and see flowers for the first time in weeks. But just remember what allows us to rejoice on “Rejoice Sunday.” Yes, we rejoice because Baby Jesus is coming at Christmas. But we also rejoice because Adult Jesus is here, now, and he wants us to turn off every distraction and spend real time with him now. And if the sun goes dark today, and the dead rise from their graves, and a booming voice retells the deeds of our lives as Christ the Judge stares into our souls, we s...

Rejoice, love the mothers, and hate the meatballs…

Rejoice, love the mothers, and hate the meatballs Skip to content Happy Friday friends, This newsletter is coming to you from somewhere over Missouri. I’m on my way to Denver this morning. It’s coming up to the end of the year, so JD and I have to be in the same place at the same time to sign some things at the bank, check our maths on the end-of-year numbers before turning them over shamefacedly to our accountant, and basically have our annual conversation about The Pillar’s financial viability heading into the New Year. Assuming we haven’t made a catastrophic mistake, I’m quietly confident The Pillar will still be standing in 2024. That’s cause to rejoice all on its own. Though, if I am being honest, things are still some way off from being as rosy as a Gaudete Sunday chasuble. It’s no s...

A Random Catholic Blog Just Became The Most-Interacted With Site On Facebook…

—by Adam Bumas We’ve been using Newswhip’s real-time tracking data to analyze the top posts, links, and publishers on Facebook since April. It’s usually a mix of known publishers, some viral videos, and the occasional Taylor Swift post. That is, until November, when all 10 of the most popular links on Facebook were from a blog called Catholic Fundamentalism. Catholic Fundamentalism first came to our attention in September, when the single most popular link on the platform for that month was “Do Catholics find ‘Life’ by being pleasing to God? The Psalms tell us! #17.” The page linking the post had 409,000 total interactions in September. For scale, the Associated Press obituary for Jimmy Buffet had 356,000 interactions over the same time. It was unusual, sure, but random sites s...

Vatican Shutting Down Loyola Community Co-Founded by Accused Abuser Father Marko Rupnik…

Since then, the Vatican has announced that Rupnik will face a canonical process over the abuse allegations after Pope Francis decided to waive the statute of limitations on the claims. According to one alleged Italian victim, Rupnik guided her to enter the Loyola Community in Slovenia, demanding “absolute availability and obedience,” isolating her from her friends and family, at a time when he was physically and spiritually abusing her. “Father Marko had openly started to duress other sisters in the community with the usual psycho-spiritual strategies he had already used with me, with the goal of having sex with as many women as possible,” the former Loyola sister told the Italian media outlet “Domani” in December 2022. “At the beginning of the 1990s there were 41 sisters and, from what I ...
