Pope adds feast of Sts. Martha, Mary and Lazarus to General Roman Calendar; decrees optional memorials for Sts. Hildegard, John of Ávila, and Gregory of Narek…

Vatican City, Feb 2, 2021 / 06:00 am MT (CNA).- Pope Francis on Tuesday added the memorial of Sts. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus to the General Roman Calendar, giving the siblings the combined feast day of July 29. A decree from the Congregation for Divine Worship said on Feb. 2 that Pope Francis had included the three saints in the General Roman Calendar “considering the important evangelical witness they offered in welcoming the Lord Jesus into their home, in listening to him attentively, in believing that he is the resurrection and the life.” The General Roman Calendar is the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, which denotes the dates of holy days and the feast days of saints commemorated annually. The memorial of St. Martha was already included on Jan. 29 in the General Roman Calen...

The whole universe turns round the weight of God’s love…

“And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” (John 12:32) St. Augustine wrote “Pondus meum amor meus,” which means, “My weight is my love.” In other words, our love is what draws us to something. We bear a certain heaviness (gravitas) towards the things that we love.  As a physics teacher, this brings to mind what I know about gravitation and all kinds of analogies begin to fall into place, as if the mass of one idea is enough to draw similar ideas to itself.  But are these analogies valid? Is the similarity between weight and love only the result of an overactive imagination, or is love somehow the meaning of weight?  Thankfully, I am not the only person to have asked this question or come to the following conclusion: our physical universe means...

You belong to God the Father — so don’t be afraid of the future…

“The same Eternal Father who cares for you today,” says St. Francis de Sales, “will take good care of you tomorrow and every day of your life.” “Be not afraid.” Fear and anxiety about a possible future event or circumstance is often a greater suffering than the suffering we endure when (and if) the feared event or circumstance actually occurs.  Why? Because when we are anticipating the future, we are not yet being given the grace that God will provide when that event/circumstance actually occurs. Grace, like the manna in the desert, is given on a daily (or even moment by moment) basis, as we live out and experience our lives — it is not provided for the future. Here is how St. Francis de Sales expressed it:  “Do not look forward to the trials and crosses of this life and fear. Ra...

Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease.” —Pope St. John Paul II Join Our Telegram Group : Salvation & Prosperity

6 reasons why “wokeness” on the left, and QAnon on the right, are dangerous forms of the ancient Gnostic heresy…

(Image: Jakayla Toney/Unsplash.com) The Western world is the creation of the Church, and the crisis of the West is always at bottom the crisis of the Church.  This is especially so where the Church has receded into the background of the Western mind – where men’s plans are hatched in the name of progress, science, social justice, equity, or some other purportedly secular value, and make little or no reference to religion.  For liberalism, socialism, communism, scientism, progressivism, identity politics, globalism, and all the rest – this Hydra’s head of modernist projects, however ostensibly secular, is united by two features that are irreducibly theological. First, they are all essentially apostate projects, enterprises that have arisen in the midst of Christian civil...

Prosecutors drop charges against journalists over Cardinal George Pell trial as media outlets admit breach…

CNA Staff, Feb 1, 2021 / 06:30 am MT (CNA).- Australian prosecutors announced on Monday that they were dropping charges against individual journalists accused of breaching a gag order over the trial of Cardinal George Pell. Prosecutor Lisa De Ferrari told the Supreme Court of Victoria on Feb. 1 that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had decided to drop the charges against the individuals after all 12 Australian media outlets accused of breaching the order agreed to plead guilty. The media companies also signaled that they would pay part of the DPP’s prosecution costs. “Each corporate respondent has indicated that it will plead guilty, in respect of each publication for which they are charged, to contempt by breaching the proceeding suppression order,” De Ferrari said, accordin...

Ancient fabric discovery shows how King David and King Solomon may have dressed…

A new archeological discovery may shed new light on the way King David and King Solomon dressed 3000 years ago. Researchers found remnants of woven fabric, a tassel, and fibers of wool dyed with royal purple in Israel’s Timna Valley, a color associated with royalty in the ancient world and mentioned in the Bible as being worn by Israelite kings. The Timna Valley is about 20 miles north of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea, and was a source of copper for thousands of years. Radiocarbon dating puts the textile discovery at around 1000 BC, corresponding to the United Monarchy period, when the biblical figures David and Solomon ruled Jerusalem. “This is a very exciting and important discovery,” said Dr. Naama Sukenik, curator of organic finds at the Israel Antiquities Authority. “In antiquity, ...

God is speaking, everywhere. It may be harder to hear him in the 21st century, but when you do hear him, harden not your heart: Listen, trust, and follow…..

By Tom Hoopes, January 28, 2021 It seems like the whole Western world has hardened its heart to the voice of God. In The Benedict Option, Rod Dreher spells out how a series of philosophical moves starting with William of Ockham boxed the secular West into a hopelessly godless corner. In his brilliant and important new book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self, Carl Trueman adds poetry, psychology, and science as antagonists in that story. Their critiques are necessary but can end up making the reader feel helpless, as if the world faces an unassailable wall of misunderstanding that renders the voice of God unintelligible to our world. This Sunday, the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B, the Church shows a shortcut out of the citadel of secularism: Jesus Christ. The way the Gosp...

Padre Pio’s powerful words of advice when a pandemic hit Italy…

People in Italy were terrified by a worldwide pandemic in 1918 and asked Padre Pio what they should do. During the summer of 1918, Italy was hit hard by the Spanish flu, forcing schools to close down and localbusinesses to halt. It was a scary time to be alive, as everyone appeared to get infected by this wild virus. Many were frightened by this sudden turn of events, and in Italy they turned to Padre Pio. In the biography Padre Pio: The True Story, published by Our Sunday Visitor, the mystic saint’s response to this worldwide pandemic is recorded, with the powerful words of advice he gave to one of his spiritual daughters. By September, everyone in San Giovanni Rotondo seemed to be ill, the schools were closed, and what little commerce there was in town was brought to a halt. In the next ...
