This is as evil as anything I’ve seen in a long time. China criticizes Pope over comment on persecuted Uighur Muslim minority…

BEIJING — China criticized Pope Francis on Tuesday over a passage in his new book in which he mentions suffering by China’s Uighur Muslim minority group. Foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Francis’ remarks had “no factual basis at all.” “People of all ethnic groups enjoy the full rights of survival, development, and freedom of religious belief,” Zhao said at a daily briefing. Zhao made no mention of the camps in which more than 1 million Uighurs and members of other Chinese Muslim minority groups have been held. The U.S. and other governments, along with human rights groups, say the prison-like facilities are intended to divide Muslims from their religious and cultural heritage, forcing them to declare loyalty to China’s ruling Communist Party and its leader, Xi Jinping. Can’t visit family for Thanksgiving? Interview them instead. Years from now, you’ll be glad you did…..

After my father died, my sister called up our oldest surviving relative, my great aunt Bebe who lives in Florida, and they ended up having several conversations. The things she told us about our family have been delightful (and occasionally insane). We knew, for instance, that my mother was pregnant when my parents got married, but here’s a part of the story we never heard: When my father was 19, he needed an emergency appendectomy, but his mother was away on vacation. They wouldn’t operate on him without a relative signing for permission, or possibly to pay for it. So my great aunt Bebe goes to the hospital and there is my mother, age 18, in the waiting room all upset, because, since she’s not a relative, they won’t let her up to see him. Bebe had never met her before. Bebe signs the...

Catholics can morally take soon-to-be-released COVID-19 vaccines, says U.S. bishops’ internal memo…

Days after some Catholic bishops shared misinformation on social media about Covid-19 vaccines that may soon hit the market, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops distributed a memo to all U.S. bishops stating that at least two of the vaccines are considered ethically sound. The memo also reminded bishops that church teaching allows for even the widespread use of vaccines whose origins are considered ethically unsound when other treatments are unavailable. The Catholic Church teaches that it is unethical to use stem cells derived from aborted fetuses in medical research. Earlier this month, two bishops called into question the moral permissibility of using two vaccines created in the United States by Pfizer and Moderna, both of which appear headed toward regulatory approva...

Xi Jinping gets his man: Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association announces ordination of new bishop of Qingdao…

CNA Staff, Nov 24, 2020 / 08:00 am MT (CNA).- The Chinese Patriotic Association announced Monday the ordination of a new bishop of Qingdao. The episcopal ordination of Thomas Chen Tianhao, 陈天浩, took place on Nov. 23 in Qingdao Cathedral with the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association Chairman Bishop Fang Xingyao presiding, according to a statement and photos on the association’s website. Chen, 58, had previously served as the president of the Patriotic Association of Qingdao in Shandong Province in 1998 and as a National Patriotic Association Standing Committee member since 2010. He was ordained a priest in 1989 after studying at a seminary in Shandong. In 2019, Chen led a Shandong Province standing committee meeting to “study the spirit” of a speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping in...

Santa Cruz Historical Commission calls replica mission bell “racist symbol,” tells city to remove it from intersection…

During the years that the missions were active, the bells were mainly used to wake the Franciscan friars for their daily prayers. The historical preservation commission of Santa Cruz, California last week advised the city council to remove a replica mission bell from a city intersection, saying the bell represents painful history for the indigenous people of the city. In a Nov. 18 recommendation to the city council, the Santa Cruz Historic Preservation Commission wrote that some California indigenous peoples view the mission bells as a “colonial settler and racist symbol” that “glorifies the killing, dehumanization, forced labor and imprisonment of their ancestors.” “The mission bells are a constant reminder of the brutal history of the Santa Cruz mission and to our indigenous populations,...

In rebuke to USCCB leaders, DC’s Archbishop Wilton Gregory says he favors “common ground” approach and Holy Communion for Biden …

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — As Washington’s new cardinal and with a Catholic soon to be living in the White House, Cardinal-designate Wilton D. Gregory said he hopes to collaborate where possible while respectfully pointing out where President-elect Joe Biden’s policies diverge from Catholic teaching. In a Zoom interview Nov. 24 from the Vatican’s Domus Sanctae Marthae, where he is in quarantine for 10 days as a COVID-19 precaution, the cardinal-designate said he would not prevent the new president, who goes to Mass every Sunday, from receiving Communion in the archdiocese. “The kind of relationship that I hope we will have is a conversational relationship where we can discover areas where we can cooperate that reflect the social teachings of the church, knowing full well that there are some area...

Vaccines and doubly remote cooperation in evil…

This month, two vaccines for COVID-19 finished their final tests. They proved to be 90–94 percent effective at preventing COVID, and both vaccines have been ethically produced. This is very good news indeed. Some have raised moral qualms about getting these vaccines, but the moral issues with both are so remote and minor that they should prevent nobody from getting either of them. Pfizer and Moderna Announce Vaccines On November 10, Pfizer announced the results of its final test showing 90 percent effectiveness against COVID. On the 16th, Moderna announced similar results with a 94 percent effectiveness. Both of these vaccines are part of a new set of vaccines using artificial mRNA technology. Earlier vaccines used a dead or attenuated version of the virus that was grown on some form of st...

Why Thanksgiving is a perfect example of the common good…

A natural precept attributed toward the dignity of the human person is to seek the good of another person through the act of community. I propose this argument from the nature of faith and reason that the human state is ordered to not only seek the good in another person but also to nurture and protect the person in order propagate a healthy society. The clearest example of this structure is the recognition and affirmation of the natural relationship between man and women through a natural marital covenant. If I take this premise even further, the aim and premise of the common good is to respect the dignity of the person. Because we are creatures bestowed with the gift or vice of free will depending on how one views human behavior, essentially a person would be inclined to see their fellow...

Jupiter and Saturn are about to appear closer in the sky than they have for 800 years, aligning as a ‘double planet’…

Jupiter and Saturn will align in the night sky on December 21. It’ll be the closest they’ve appeared in 800 years. The two planets move into alignment, or conjunction, every 20 years. But this year, they will be so close that they’ll look like a “double planet.” The last time Saturn and Jupiter were both this close and visible was in 1226. Here are the best ways to see this conjunction. Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories. Jupiter and Saturn are about to line up perfectly in the night sky — the two planets will get so close on December 21 that they seem to touch.  The last time they looked this close from Earth’s vantage point was nearly 800 years ago, on March 4, 1226. An astronomical event in which celestial bodies align is ca...

Some thoughts on Jesus as a “concealed king”…

We do well to further examine a quality of Christ’s kingship mentioned in yesterday’s sermon notes, namely that he is a “concealed” King. In the gospel, both the saved and condemned are surprised and wonder when they encountered Jesus at all, whether as hungry, thirsty, naked, a stranger, sick or in prison. He replies, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt 25:41). So, although concealed, Jesus says he was, quite present in those who were in such need. To examine and further understand the concealment of Jesus, consider another gospel passage. In the afternoon of the resurrection, two disciples are on the road to Emmaus and, as they journey and discuss the events of passiontide, Jesus joins them but they do not recognize hi...
