We Have Power

We Have Power

Read –  Revelation 1:10 “On the Lord’s Day I was in the spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.”

Charles Spurgeon once said, “Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without the wind, branches without sap, and like coals without fire, we are useless.” John was in the Spirit and heard the voice of the Lord, loud, like a trumpet. Being in the spirit is a phrase used to describe a supernatural encounter with God in our lives, and it is often portrayed in the scriptures.

The Spirit led Simeon and revealed that he wouldn’t die until he saw Jesus (Luke 2:26, 27). The Spirit filled Joshua, which equipped him to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land (Numbers 27:18). The Spirit of God filled Bezalel, which allowed him to create beautiful craftsmanship for the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:2-5). The bodies of those in Christ are described as temples of God because the Holy Spirit is in us (1 Corinthians 6:19). Jesus was clear that to be “born again,” to become a Christian, one must be born “of the Spirit” (John 3:5). And the effectiveness of Jesus’ ministry was assisted by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Before Jesus died (John 14:25–26; 15:26–27; 16:7–15), He told his disciples about the Comforter (i.e., the Holy Spirit), another facet of Himself. This was His way of being with us all the time. This was His way of letting us know we would still have Him. This was his way of letting us know that we would have an ever-present Comforter though our circumstances are tough.

The Christian is in the Spirit and walks by the Spirit. Every living moment is an opportunity to hear from Him. When you are moved by the Spirit, like John, be willing to listen and obey.

Prayer – Dear Lord, as you fill us with your Spirit, may our hearts be attuned to you. May we live spirit-filled and spirit-led lives doing what you have called us to do. Thank you, Lord,, for this most precious gift. Amen.

Reflect – Has God’s Spirit prompted you recently? How do you know? What’s your response?
