Yesterday morning, just as we were finishing up live-streaming an Easter Sunday Mass, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the most precious Blessed Sacrament visited our home. We were one of the first families from our parish to receive this amazing Easter gift that will continue throughout the Easter Octave. With assistance from our parish Knights of Columbus Council #13779, the clergy composed of three priests and a deacon are bringing Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to the parishioners of Saint Mary Magdalene. Our home Our sister parish here in Gilbert, Saint Anne Catholic Church, started bringing the Blessed Sacrament to their parishioners last week on Palm Sunday, and the last I read and saw on Facebook and Instagram, they are continuing to do so. I remember seeing this last week on Facebook ...
Last year’s converts at the Easter vigil 2019 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale, Michigan, attest to the faith-affirming experience of many students at Hillsdale College. (Courtesy of Father David Reamsnyder) How collegiate life has spurred searching in minds and hearts. HILLSDALE, Mich. — Students at Hillsdale College pursue goodness, truth and beauty through a liberal arts curriculum. To their surprise, some find what they are seeking in the Catholic Church. This year, 18 Hillsdale students are preparing to enter the Church. Due to the coronavirus crisis, their entry is tentatively planned for the vigil of Pentecost. “When I came to Hillsdale, I had no idea that I would be Catholic by my senior year,” a 2018 graduate told the Register. “If someone had told me that, I woul...

A 17TH-CENTURY ITALIAN RENAISSANCE DEPICTION OF THE RISEN CHRIST AND THE MADONNA, WITH ANGELS AND SAINTS (Shutterstock) Few would have foreseen, as we packed into pews on Ash Wednesday, the Lent we had in store: that our fast would become an involuntary one from the Living Bread, that our almsgiving would feature social distancing from those in need, and that our prayer would occur mostly in the domestic church and in cyberspace. This year we have all been led into the desert, separated from the distractions of sports, late-night shows, parties, outside commitments, even face-to-face contact with friends, neighbors and extended family. We have all had an extended Lenten meditation on death, on how we are dust and unto dust will return, not knowing the day or the hour when the earthly end w...
2 Minute Read On Palm Sunday, a rare relic called by the people of Monte Sant’Angelo, “The Sword of St. Michael,” was processed through the city streets for protection from the ongoing pandemic. The sword is linked to an apparition at Monte Sant’Angelo, representing his miraculous intercession to save the city on multiple occasions, such as 1656 during a plague. –> What is the “Sword of St. Michael” and how is it connected to a comic book? According to FoggiaToday, “the city turned to its patron saint through the words of its mayor, Pierpaolo d’Arienzo: ‘Archangel Michael, is a city that kneels before you through my knees; it is a city that looks up to you through my eyes; it is a city that prays to you today through my voice. Just as in 1656, even today we have crossed t...

Could you give us some specifics? What are these institutions facing after the novel coronavirus outbreak in the US? Robinson: Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has rocke...
All the dungeons of death have been thrown open by the Lord of Life. What is the bottom line of Christian faith? Is there an essential element, the expression of which says everything? And if so, is it reasonable to expect people living today to believe it? These were questions that a young German professor by the name of Josef Ratzinger wrestled with in the summer of 1967, laying them before his students in a series of lectures which later became a famous book called Introduction To Christianity. A book so captivating that on the strength of its argument Pope Paul VI practically made him a bishop on the spot, thereupon setting in motion a series of elevations that would eventuate in his becoming pope — Benedict XVI. While I cannot speak for others concerning the impact the book had o...
With active dry yeast in short supply, many home-bakers who are sheltering in place have succumbed to the siren song of sourdough. But people have produced bread without yeast across history, cultures, and climes, leaving an incredible array of styles to choose from when your leavening options are limited. From the sticky-sweet steamed bread of Colonial New England to the Icelandic rye that rises in a hot spring, here are seven breads that prove you don’t have to track down that elusive packet of yeast to bake something extraordinary. Turn bland brews into delicious bread. Mark Bonica/CC BY 2.0 Beer Bread The relationship between brewing and baking dates back centuries and is especially prevalent within European cookbooks of the 1700s and 1800s.
