Pope Francis Names New Patriarch of Lisbon Following World Youth Day…

By Hannah Brockhaus Rome Newsroom, Aug 10, 2023 / 04:30 am Pope Francis on Thursday named Bishop Rui Manuel Sousa Valério as patriarch of Lisbon, just days after the conclusion of World Youth Day in the capital city of Portugal. The pope on Aug. 10 also accepted the resignation of Cardinal-Patriarch Manuel Clemente, who has led the patriarchate since May 2013. Clemente turned 75 last month. Valério, a member of the Missionaries of the Company of Mary for more than three decades, has been bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Portugal since the end of 2018. The 58-year-old bishop was born in Ourém, in the Diocese of Leira-Fátima. He studied for the priesthood at two Rome universities, the Pontifical Lateran and the Pontifical Gregorian. He also completed a course in linguistics at a third u...

What does the Pope’s Tuesday motu proprio on personal prelatures mean for Opus Dei?

What the pope changed about prelatures Skip to content Pope Francis issued a new motu proprio Tuesday amending canon law on the leader and members of Opus Dei, the Church’s only personal prelature. Credit: Mathew Schwartz via Unsplash The changes, which cover two canons in the Code of Canon Law, technically apply to all personal prelatures, although there is actually only one such prelature existing in the Church. But what do Francis’ latest legal amendments mean for Opus Dei in practice? And what is a personal prelature, anyway? The Pillar explains. Share What is a personal prelature? In the early 1940s, the bishops of France decided to found a mission of priests: a seminary where priests would be formed to evangelize in French dioceses  which were both poor, and increasingly secular...

Who Will Be the Great Saints of Our Present Age?

COMMENTARY: A brief look at the dark period of 1533-1539 tells us that right now, God is raising up the apostles and saints of the 21st century whom he will use to respond to the challenges of our difficult time in ways you and I can’t even imagine. It is essential to remember that even in the darkest of times for the Church, God is always at work, calling forth disciples whose wildly different lives, situations, personalities and responses to God will send out ripples that converge and together change the direction of history. Most U.S. Catholics know that King Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church in England, beheaded Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, and began suppressing the ancient religious communities. The years spanning 1533-1539 marked the dramatic beginning of gene...

U.S. Bishops Protest Biden Administration’s Addition of Abortion to Pregnant Workers Protections…

“We supported the bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act because it enhanced the protection of pregnant mothers and their preborn children, which is something that we have encouraged Congress to prioritize,” Burbidge said in a statement. “The act is pro-worker, pro-family, and pro-life. It is a total distortion to use this law as a means for advancing abortion and the complete opposite of needed assistance for pregnant mothers.” Burbidge argued that the proposed rules are contrary to the legislative intent.  “To include accommodations for obtaining an abortion is wrong and contrary to the text, legislative history, and purpose of the act, which is to help make it possible for working mothers to remain gainfully employed, if desired, while protecting their health and that of the...

Take #1 (from a young Catholic woman): ‘Barbie’ extends a peaceful hand in a cultural frenzy…

This summer, swathes of pink-clad women flooded into movie theaters to attend the much-anticipated premiere of Barbie, director Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster debut. Until now, indie films were Gerwig’s bread and butter. Her projects largely center on female protagonists and pursue themes related to femininity: examining female friendship, women as artists, and the progression from girlhood to womanhood. Both Ladybird (2017) and Little Women (2019) performed and reviewed well, but neither came close to the sweeping success of this most recent project.  According to Deadline, Barbie raked in $162 million just in its opening weekend — about twice as much as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, with which it shared a release date of July 21. It’s the first woman-directed film to gross a billion ...

Can I be a good person apart from God?

It makes sense for a person of no visible Christian faith or understanding of Christianity to identify himself as a good person with no correlation to God. The characteristic or charism of being good defines what the person genuinely believes is the correct mode of living. There are many reasons why a person would affirm the virtue of goodness apart from God, from being raised in a community where Christianity was either not considered important or did not exist entirely, which is possible now more than ever. Or, the notion of embracing any form of religion was considered anathema just because it represented a God the person disagreed with. Whatever the case, the Divine construct of who God is as alpha and omega, Lord and King revealed through His Son Jesus Christ, the second person of the...

St. Dominic, secret shopper, and balloon harpoons…

St. Dominic, secret shopper, and balloon harpoons Skip to content Hey everybody, Today is the feast of St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers, and you’re reading The Tuesday Pillar Post. I have the great good fortune to know a lot of Dominican priests and sisters — and it’s my observation that Dominicans are close by whenever good things are happening in the life of the Church.  But it turns out that I don’t actually know very much about St. Dominic — most of my knowledge of the early Dominican order centers around St. Thomas Aquinas, the great saint who was born just four years after Dominic died.  It also turns out that mine is not an uncommon problem. Chesterton observed that St. Francis — that OTHER medieval mendicant — is “the easiest saint to understand and love...

New technology uncovers mysterious doodles hidden in a 1,300-year-old copy of the Acts of the Apostles…

(Image credit: Archiox/Bodleian Library) Centuries-old books, manuscripts and printing plates often contain invisible etchings, mysterious letters – and even doodles. A new technology that maps the surface of these objects is bringing them to light. A Around 1,300 years ago, a woman leant over a precious book, and etched some letters into the margin, along with some cartoonish drawings. She didn’t use ink – she scratched them in, so they were almost invisible to the naked eye. Until last year, no-one knew they were there. The 8th-Century book – a copy of the Act of Apostles from the Christian New Testament – is now kept in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Researchers have known for a while that the religious text was probably owned by a woman, but they weren’t sur...

ROME – In a recent interview, Pope Francis either confirmed or announced a flurry of upcoming diplomatic initiatives focused on several of his key priorities, including the war in Ukraine, climate change and inter-faith relations, especially outreach to Islam. The possibility of naming a permanent representative to act as a go-between with authorities in Ukraine and Russia. A request to President Lula da Silva of Brazil to intercede with the government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua...

Miracle at Fátima? World Youth Day Pilgrim Regains Her Sight After Receiving Holy Communion at Mass…

Not long after having recovered her sight, Jimena told the Spanish radio station COPE that she woke up that morning “as I have been getting up for two and a half years, seeing super blurry, very badly.” She explained that she had gone to Mass with her friends “because we are at WYD and after receiving Communion I began to cry a lot, because it was the last day of the novena and I wanted to be cured and I had very much asked God please [cure me].” “When I opened my eyes, I could see perfectly,” the young woman continued, “it was overwhelming; very many thanks must be given for the miracle, because I saw the altar, the tabernacle, my girlfriends were there, and I could see them perfectly.” In addition, she said that she was able to read the novena prayer that she was praying and that she sti...

Anti-mafia priest at WYD amid political row with Lega leader Matteo Salvini…

ROME – When the estimated 65,000 Italian participants in the August 1-6 World Youth Day in Lisbon gather for a special kickoff program tonight, one of the stars of the show will be Italy’s most famous anti-mafia priest, Father Luigi Ciotti. Ciotti founded an organization called Libera, or “free,” in the early 1990s, which has gone on to become the country’s largest anti-mafia network, with 304 local chapters up and down the country. As a result of threats on his life, Ciotti has moved with a police escort for years, but has never stopped speaking out. His appearance in Lisbon right now will have special political subtext, as the 77-year-old Ciotti is currently involved in a verbal tug-of-war with Matteo Salvini, Italy’s deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the far-right Lega party. Iron...
