This intriguing theory about ‘The Lord of the Rings’ holds that J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth isn’t a place — it’s a time in (English) history…

There are tons of theories surrounding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and, more broadly, the fictional world of Middle-Earth in which the books take place. One of these theories is that Middle-Earth is actually not a fictional world at all, but our own Earth in prehistoric times, before — as historian Dan Carlin recently put it in his podcast Hardcore History — “the so-called Age of Man began.” This theory has been around for a while, but it’s unclear where it originated from. It’s possible this theory can be traced back to Tolkien himself, who once said he created Middle-Earth to provide England with a mythology that could compare to those of the Greeks or the Icelanders. The theory gained traction after a public lecture at the University of Oxford in 2022, titled “On Hobbits and ...

Vatican Withdraws World Youth Day 2023 Stamp After Criticism in Portugal…

Other critics faulted the design for seeming to resemble the propaganda of the Salazar dictatorship. The monument was built at a time when the dictatorship sought to strengthen nationalist sentiment and support Portugal’s colonial expansion in Africa, the Associated Press reported. Portuguese Bishop Carlos Moreira Azevedo, who is now a delegate to the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences, said that the stamp was “in bad taste.” A World Youth Day spokesperson initially told the radio station Renascença, whose owners include the Patriarchate of Lisbon, that controversies are “normal food on social networks” and that it is important “not to distort the fundamental objectives.” The stamp was intended to sell for 3.10 euros, about $3.30, the Associated Press reported. The Vatican’s numi...

Right, left, and center, why is no cardinal good enough to be papabile anymore?

Right, left, and center, why is no cardinal good enough to be papabile anymore? Skip to content Past a certain point in a pontificate, handicapping the frontrunners to succeed the pope becomes an inevitable part of the daily chatter among curial staffers and Vatican journalists. But the current field of contenders is surprisingly thin, and, given the increasingly critical coverage any potential papabile seems to attract, there may be a real risk for any cardinal seen to be flying too high. While that may be put down partly to a desire in some quarters to ensure a reliable and effective heir to the Francis pontificate, the result may well be a wide open vote to succeed him. Can You Be Forced to Work on Sundays? Supreme Court to Announce Decision Soon…

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor Amazon Prime Delivery must stop Christians from keeping the Third Commandment Both the extent and the limitations of the Supreme Court’s power are visible in a pending case raising the question of how far employers must go to accommodate employees’ religion. Underlying this dispute — yet obviously unreachable by the Supreme Court — is the larger reality of the sabbath’s de facto secularization in today’s America. The case now before the court — Groff v. DeJoy it’s called — concerns a mail carrier who lost his job for refusing to deliver mail on Sunday because his Christian faith forbids him to work on the sabbath. The justices heard oral arguments last month and will announce their decision before the court’s current term ends in late June or early July. ...

Crazed Driver Smashes Through St. Anne’s Gate at Vatican; Guards Fire at Vehicle Before Arresting Suspect…

A car driven by someone with apparent psychiatric problems rushed through a Vatican gate Thursday evening and sped past Swiss Guards into a palace courtyard before the driver was apprehended by police, the Holy See said. The car drove through the Sant’Anna entrance to the Vatican at 8 PM, the Holy See press office said in a statement. After initially being turned away by the Pontifical Swiss Guard, the car left the gate and then returned at a high speed, “forcing his way through the two control gates,” the statement said.  In an attempt to stop the car, one of the Gendarmarie inspectors guarding the gate fired at the car’s front tires. The car didn’t stop, even though the bullet made contact with its front left fender.  The driver was arrested after ...

LA Dodgers Disinvite Anti-Catholic ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’ Drag Performers From ‘Pride Night’ After Backlash…

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles criticized the Los Angeles Dodgers on Twitter this week for its plans to honor the group. The Los Angeles Dodgers have announced that the franchise will no longer be honoring a group of drag performers that mock the Catholic faith on June 16 during the team’s LGBTQ+ Pride Night after receiving criticism from Catholic leaders. In the Dodger’s May 17 statement about its Pride Night, the organization said on Twitter: “This year, as part of a full night of programming, we invited a number of groups to join us. We are now aware that our inclusion of one group in particular — The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — in this year’s Pride Night has been the source of some controversy.” The L.A. chapter of the Sisters of ...

Taking ‘stock’ in the brown scapular, a Marshall matter, and that Tyler tweet…

Taking ‘stock,’ a Marshall matter, and that Tyler tweet Skip to content Hey everybody, Today is the feast of St. Simon Stock, the 13th-century Carmelite who, by tradition, received from the Blessed Virgin the brown scapular which forms part of the Carmelite habit, and which — in smaller form — is worn daily by non-Carmelite Catholics around the world (including me!). The scapular represents the filial piety of Catholics who have entrusted themselves to the protection of Our Lady — it is a sign of receiving Mary as a mother, and asking for her intercessory prayers. It became a popular devotion beyond the Carmelites in the 16th and 17th centuries, and remains one today — and it probably helped that Pope John Paul was devoted to the scapular sacramental, reportedly asking in 1981,...

Why woodpeckers can hammer without getting headaches…

SPECIALIZED: A curving complex of cartilage and bone within a woodpecker’s head permits the bird to extend and store its exceptionally long tongue. Illustration by Denise Takahashi. The feeding strategy of woodpeckers requires two specialized adaptations: one understood by the whole world, the other known to but a few students of birds. The first is the ability to hammer into wood and throw aside the chips, whether excavating a nest cavity or digging for tasty beetle grubs. The woodpecker’s head strikes with at least 1,000 times the force of gravity (1,000 g), yet the bird suffers no apparent harm. By contrast, any human who experienced a 100 g impact would surely die. So why don’t woodpeckers damage their brains, or at least get headaches? Several factors contribute to the bird’s shock-ab...

Sign for blasphemous ‘God Is Trans: A Queer Spiritual Journey’ exhibit removed, but the exhibit will remain next to the altar at St. Paul the Apostle in Manhattan…

Joseph Zwilling, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York, told CNA Monday that the archdiocese expressed its concerns about the display to the parish and only became aware of the artwork through media reports. Fox News Digital reported on May 10 that the exhibit had been removed from the 19th-century mother church of the Paulist Fathers, but Paul Snatchko, a spokesman for the Paulist Fathers, told CNA Monday that the display is still up at the church.  Snatchko said that the Paulist Fathers took the concerns of the archdiocese “very seriously” and, in response, removed the sign with the name and description of the display on May 9.  When asked if the Paulist Fathers believe it is acceptable to say that God is transgender, Snatchko answered “no.” A new name and description are...

Another Catholic order fades away: AP offers a familiar story, from only one point of view…

The sad Catholic story format has become rather standardized by now. First, you need a declining college, seminary, parish, local school or a religious order. Then (2) you add the details of the crisis and some brave quotes from the people who have decided to make hard decisions about the future — including their beliefs about the reasons for the decline. Here’s the optional part: There may be (3) quotes from critics of the fading institution, as well as it’s supporters. This implies that there are Catholic issues being debated that are connected to this case study. Now, I will argue that there needs to be (4) an additional factor, one other question, added to this increasingly familiar equation: Are there a few Catholic institutions of this kind that are surviving or even growing? The ans...

Pope pauses Wednesday general audience to take phone call (“We’ve been trying to reach you about your Popemobile’s extended warranty …”)…

By Courtney Mares Vatican City, May 17, 2023 / 09:18 am To the surprise of the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis briefly interrupted his Wednesday general audience to take a phone call.  After the pope greeted English-speaking pilgrims at his public audience on May 17, one of his assistants walked over to where Pope Francis was seated and handed him a cellphone.  The pope spoke quietly on the phone for about one minute while the crowd waited in silence.  After the phone call, the general audience resumed as usual with a Vatican employee reading the German translation of the pope’s catechesis.
