Pope’s Sunday Angelus: Lent Is a Time to ‘Encounter Wild Beasts and Angels’…

By Matthew Santucci Vatican City, Feb 18, 2024 / 10:30 am On the first Sunday of Lent, Pope Francis focused his Angelus address on the temptation of Jesus in the desert to highlight that it is an invitation for us to enter the proverbial desert to come “in contact with the truth.” Observing that during the 40 days in the desert Christ was in the company of both “wild beasts and angels,” the pope reflected that when we enter this symbolic “inner wildness,” we too “encounter wild beasts and angels.” These wild beats assume a deeply symbolic meaning in our “spiritual life,” and so “we can think of them as the disordered passions that divide our heart, trying to take possession of it. They entice us, they seem seductive, but if we are not careful, we risk being torn apart by them,” the pope sa...

5 things to consider when temptation seems overwhelming…

(Image: Moon/Unsplash.com) Lent is almost here. The Church asks us to make this season one of particular effort to learn holiness’s two aspects: living fully the new life in Christ that began in our baptism and putting away those things preventing us from experiencing that new life. We fast from good things to remember that all good things come from God and can only be enjoyed when used according to God’s will. We also give them up to strengthen our will so that, when tempted toward things we know are truly wrong, we will be able to resist. Image (c. 1810) of Lorenzo Scupoli, on a French translation of “The Spiritual Combat” (Image: Wikipedia) In Colossians 3:10, St. Paul describes the new life that we have in Christ and makes clear what we have to do to keep that life alive in us: “Put to...

Lent is an opportunity to develop a conscious awareness of Jesus…..

Are you sure you are prepared to make those sacrifices during Lent? Giving up your favorite television show, swearing at others, eating chocolate, or perhaps starting an exercise routine. Is this something you want to start during Lent? You will either quit after three days or stop altogether after Lent is over and then what is the point? Perhaps you might try to be considerate of those around you instead of yourself. On second thought, maybe not, you like yourself too much. Praying at the crack of dawn for more than five minutes a day might be something manageable and not too difficult to start and maintain throughout Lent. But that means less sleep, I am not sure you want to go that route. How about aimlessly talking about God? I do not see the need to develop a close relationship with J...

Sister Cecilia María of the Holy Face, Argentine nun remembered for her remarkable smile, considered for beatification…

The document calls on the faithful to communicate all information from which in some way elements favorable or contrary to the reputation of sanctity of Sister Cecilia María de la Santa Faz can be deduced by emailing cancilleria@arquisantafe.org.ar or by postal mail to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz (Av. Gral. López 2720, Santa Fe, Argentina). As part of the process, the archdiocese requests that anyone who has any writings by Sister Cecilia to send them in as soon as possible. The edict will be published for three months in the Santa Fe cathedral, the St. Joseph and St. Teresa Carmelite monastery, and the archdiocesan basilicas and shrines. It will also be published in the official media of the archdiocese as well as in any place with a connection to Sister Cecilia. Who was S...

Centuries before Our Lady of Guadalupe, Divine Providence began preparing the people of Mexico…

By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio – articles – email ) | Feb 16, 2024 There has been a great deal of study of the Providential preparation for the Christian message in the Holy Land and in Europe, but not so much in other regions. Obviously, of course, the entire Old Testament is a kind of historical, cultural and spiritual chronicle of God’s preparation for the coming of the Messiah to His chosen people. Despite Christ’s widespread rejection by the Jews, there has been tremendous reflection on and analysis of the long period of preparation. This sacred history and subsequent reflections upon it by Christians around the world have led to a keen awareness of a long preparation by God so that, in the fullness of time, His personal disclosure in Christ might be accepted and lived by those w...

Jesus shows us how to do battle, spending 40 days in the desert as the model for our fight…..

We have to go to great lengths to tear ourselves away from our own twisted loves in order to stand in the presence of God. That is the message the Church presents us with in the readings for the First Sunday of Lent, Year B. That is exactly what we promise to do in Baptism: We reject Satan, his pomps and works, and all his empty promises. We promise to stand up to the malignant narcissist who has been gaslighting us our whole lives long. As Lent begins, Jesus shows us how to do battle, spending 40 days in the desert as the model for our fight. St. Mark’s Gospel reading this Sunday immediately follows the Gospel we heard at the Baptism of the Lord. In January, we heard: “On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a ...

Irreverent Funeral Service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Trans Activist Sparks Outcry…

On X (formerly Twitter), CatholicVote described the service as a staged “mockery of the Christian faith INSIDE St. Patrick’s Cathedral” by trans activists. Others called for Cardinal Timothy Dolan and the Archdiocese of New York to respond to what they considered to be sacrilege. “Is Cardinal Dolan planning to make reparations and exorcise and consecrate the altar and nave?” said one X user, apparently in reference to steps the Diocese of Brooklyn took when a pop star performed an inappropriate music video in the sanctuary of a parish church. Many of the 1,000 in attendance wore drag and scanty outfits. At the foot of the altar stood an image of the Argentinian-born Gentili with a halo, surrounded by the Spanish words for “whore,” “transvestite,” “blessed,” and “mother.” More in US Trans a...

Francis X. Maier talked to 103 faithful Catholics, including 30 bishops, for his new book. Their ‘True Confessions’ will renew your hope…..

(us.fotolia.com) Francis X. Maier is a senior fellow in Catholic studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington, D.C., a contributor to CWR, and the author of the new book True Confessions: Voices of Faith from a Life in the Church, published by Ignatius Press. He recently corresponded with CWR, reflecting on his many conversations with bishops, priests, religious, and lay people, while also sharing insights from the words and actions of “mature, faithful Catholics” in the United States. CWR: Why choose the title True Confessions, and why write such a book now? Francis X. Maier: We “confess” our faith every Sunday at Mass, but also through the witness of our daily lives. I wanted to capture what confessing Jesus Christ really looks like through the voices of people who are livi...

Biden administration works to deny financial aid to pro-life pregnancy centers…

(CNS photo/Kevin Lamarque, Reuters) In October 2023, the Biden administration, through the Department of Health and Human Services, under the direction of Xavier Becerra, continued its unrelenting attack on pro-life family centers. After a failed attempt to deny financial aid to pro-life centers in Oklahoma, the administration now seeks new limits in a proposed regulation, titled “Strengthening Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) as a Safety Net and Work Program” and created by a federal statute. According to the statute, the TANF Program was created to (1) provide assistance to needy families so that children may be cared for in their own home...

12 Books for Your Spiritual Reading This Lent…

The traditional Lenten practices of intensified prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are spiritual disciplines to be followed along the six-week pilgrimage from Ash Wednesday to the Easter Triduum. As I suggested in Roman Pilgrimage: The Station Churches, that journey can be lived as a kind of annual catechumenate-for-the-already-baptized, in which we join the catechumens — who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil or received into full communion with the Catholic Church — in a deep-dive examination of conscience and a more thorough reflection on baptism as the font of Christian vocation. Having literary companions along the Lenten journey can help us live those traditional practices more intensely. Spiritual reading comes in many forms, pre-eminent among them the Holy Scriptures. In its Lenten ...

According to Indian Christian traditions, St. Thomas the Apostle established Seven churches in Kerala…

Christianity, with approximately 28 Million Indian followers constitute 2.3 percent of India’s population. It is traditionally believed that Christianity was introduced to India by Thomas the Apostle, who supposedly landed in Muziris, Kerala in AD 52 and traveled along the coast to Goa spreading the word of Christ. Roman Catholicism was first introduced to India by Portuguese, Italian and Irish Jesuits in the 16th century to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ among Indians. Most Christian schools, hospitals, primary care centers originated through the Roman Catholic missions brought by the trade of these countries. Evangelical Protestantism was later spread to India by the efforts of British, American, German, Scotti...

Here is my Lenten resolution: Trim what is expendable, focus on the Eucharist, and count myself among “the living”…

By Phil Lawler ( bio – articles – email ) | Feb 13, 2024 Re-reading Jesus of Nazareth, I find myself stopping frequently to meditate on Pope Benedict’s many incisive observations. But recently I was stopped in my tracks by what seemed an almost parenthetical remark: his observation that “the early Christians called themselves simply ‘the living.’” To say that we are “the living” might suggest that other people are dead. But Pope Benedict is discussing the joy that those early Christians felt because of their confidence in eternal life. They were “living” in a way different from their pagan neighbors. They rejoiced in a life that could not be extinguished by death. So it was not only their hope in the afterlife that made those early Christians think of themselves as “the living....
