Sts. Cosmas and Damian, Pray For Us!…

Now, more than ever, Catholic physicians and nurses need the patronage of Sts. Cosmas and Damian. They’ve become an optional memorial in the current Roman Calendar, displaced from their traditional feast day on Sept. 27 because the Church decided that St. Vincent de Paul is more significant to Catholics of our times. But Sts. Cosmas and Damian are always mentioned in the First Eucharistic Prayer and, since the Roman Canon was the Eucharistic Prayer for centuries, the fact these two brothers are included every time it is prayed suggests we learn something about them. They were doctors. They were born in Arabia. They seemed to have practiced their medical profession somewhere on the southern coast of Turkey. They were said to have taken no fee for their services, earning them the name anargy...

Pope Makes ‘Church of St. Mary of the Isle’ on UK’s Isle of Man First Co-Cathedral in British History…

Monsignor John Devine, who is parish priest of St. Mary of the Isle, said the process of being granted co-cathedral recognition had lasted a whole year but expressed his delight that it had finally happened.  In a statement released by the Catholic Bishops Conference for England and Wales on Sept. 22, he said: “I am delighted that St. Mary of the Isle has been granted cathedral status; it is wonderful news for Catholics across the island.” Devine said he was first approached by Douglas Borough Council, who pointed out that cities have cathedrals and the island already has an Anglican cathedral on the west coast. They enquired whether it would be possible to elevate the Church of St. Mary of the Isle in Douglas to the status of a cathedral. “The archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Revere...

The problem with long Masses? It’s not the reverence — it’s the ego…..

(Redux) Earlier this week, Cardinal Dolan of New York published a column in which he reflected on the results of the listening sessions in the archdiocese related to liturgy. In particular, he wrote about the complaint that Masses are “too long:” Could they be on to something? A liturgical scholar observed to me recently, “The greatest advance of liturgical renewal after the council was the restoration of the prominence and solemnity of the Easter Vigil. But the greatest negative of these last decades has been that every Sunday Mass is now as long as Holy Saturday!” The dismal stories the people shared with me reached litany length. Now, they tell me, Mass starts with music rehearsal, then an obligatory “greeting” to those around you. By then, we’re five minutes past when Mass was supposed...

This angel-botherer knows: If you call angels, they will come!…

(OSV News) Parents are all too familiar with the sort of anxiety that can subconsciously nag at you all day long, before really kicking in at night. While we’re up and about and keeping busy, it’s possible to shush the parental panic that ever resides just below our breastbones — that is implanted within us at our children’s births. It begins as a seed that we water and over-water with our worst fears and deepest imaginings of all the ways they are vulnerable, all the ways kids can be hurt either physically or emotionally or in the psyche. Hurt by the world in all its vagaries. Hurt by us, too, no matter how perfect we try to be. These anxieties burst fully into flower once you’ve crawled into bed, when every distant siren pulls at the gut, and every unanswered text indicates catastrophe, ...

A ‘very human life’ is the hallmark of Gwyneth Thompson-Briggs’ sacred art…

Gwyneth Thompson-Briggs said her husband Andrew asked her after Mass, “Did you see the guy with Jesus hair?” She did see him and had wanted to run after him, but she hesitated, and now she regrets it. He would have made a great model. It was one leap she didn’t take, but only one. Four years ago, she and her husband took a chance, and now she supports the family full-time with their home business, Gwyneth Thompson-Briggs Sacred Art. She mostly paints commissions and also teaches painting in person. As a working mother and breadwinner, she’s something of an oddity in her community. “In my parish, many of the mothers stay home full time, and the husband works. I try to explain to people we chose to have this small business of making sacred art because it allows us to live the liturgical year...

“Verdigris” is the color of oxidation, impermanence, and the Statue of Liberty…

Palais Paar, Vienna, Austria, ca. 1765–72 (Courtesy Metropolitan Museum of Art) It’s hard to imagine now, but people once gathered together freely, shoulders rubbing against shoulders, breath exchanged between lungs, bodies open to one another—all this closeness, almost a million people standing in a crowd just to watch a statue get undressed. It was a rainy October day in 1886 and the Statue of Liberty was shrouded in a French flag. The weather was miserable and the ceremonial unveiling went poorly. The drapery was pulled off too soon (right in the middle of a speech), and the fireworks display had to be canceled and rescheduled. Still, over a million freezing New Yorkers came out (including a boat full of suffragettes, protesting the statue). While it’s hard for me to even imagine standi...

How to find serenity through the will of God…

Finding Peace in the Storm By Dan Burke Sophia Institute Press, 2023 144 pages, $17.95 To order: SophiaInstitute.com Over the past few years, some Catholic publishers have reintroduced classic spiritual writings to a new generation. That is a tremendous gift. Today, when so many of us Catholics seem inordinately focused on temporal affairs like politics, there is a need to refocus on the Last Things — and this can be well accomplished through spiritual reading.  Dan Burke’s Finding Peace in the Storm is a welcome addition to this category. His book not only polishes an old gem by St. Alphonsus Liguori, born Sept. 27, 1696, titled Uniformity With God’s Will, but guides a modern audience along the way. To appreciate St. Alphonsus’ writing, it is helpful to understand his biography. ...

German Bishops Engage in Tug-of-War Over Blessing Same-Sex Unions…

According to AP, the ceremony was punctuated by people singing the Beatles’ song “All You Need Is Love” while waving rainbow flags.  Such stunts, covered extensively by the media, are a challenge to Woelki. The Cologne archbishop has reprimanded a priest over blessing same-sex unions, emphasizing that such events are not possible, as explained by the Vatican. This admonishment drew sharp criticism from Birgit Mock, vice president of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), who labeled Woelki’s actions “beyond incomprehensible.” Mock, who also heads the Synodal Way’s working group on sexuality, has been a staunch advocate for blessing same-sex unions, putting her at odds with Woelki and the official Vatican stance. Delegates at the fifth assembly of the German Synodal Way, meet...

How an extraordinary healing led to the creation of The National Centre for Padre Pio…

For medical providers, her imminent death seemed all but sealed — even in the eyes of Dr. C. Everett Koop, a surgeon involved in her care who would later become the U.S. Surgeon General under the Reagan administration. While Koop helped remove Calandra’s bladder to provide her comfort, he likewise advised her parents to make preparations for her funeral. However, that day did not come to pass — as told by Calandra herself when recounting the story to “EWTN News In Depth.” “[Koop] said, ‘You need … to come to terms with this now, you can’t hang on to this dying child,” Calandra recounted. “And my mother went home, and she didn’t accept it.” Calandra described how her mother, a devout Catholic, picked up a book someone had given to her about Padre Pio and heard an inner voice as she read the...

Controversial Mercy in the Vineyard…

25th Sunday in Ordinary TimeBy Fr. Victor Feltes The landowner in Jesus’ parable recruits workers throughout the day. He goes to the marketplace at dawn, at nine, at noon, at three, and at five, hiring laborers each time and sending them to work in his vineyard. At the end of the day, he pays his longest laborers one silver denarius coin (the wage to which they had previously agreed), but he surprisingly also pays even his briefest employees the same amount. When some grumble at this, the boss replies, “My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? …Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?” Why did the employer risk this HR controversy? Why did he wish to pay the later workers so generously? The Old Cove...

When Our Lady of Ransom Rescued Christians From Slavery: The Little-Known September Feast You May Have Missed…

September boasts a good number of Marian feasts and memorials: Our Lady’s Nativity (Sept.8), the Holy Name of Mary (Sept.12), Our Lady of Sorrows (Sept.15), and Our Lady of La Salette (Sept.19). But have you heard of Our Lady of Ransom (changed to Our Lady of Mercy after Vatican II)? Not many Catholics in North America have, but in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, the feast is widely known, particularly in Barcelona as she is the city’s patroness. The feast of Our Lady of Ransom was officially added to the liturgical calendar in 1960 to be celebrated on Sept. 24. So what is the story behind this title of Our Lady? Saracens, or Moors, captured much of Spain in the 13th century. They forced Christians into slavery. In 1218, Our Lady appeared to three men at the same ti...

Feminism: America’s Best Frienemy…

It’s time we abandon the tyranny of lies and start restoring our country by sharing a true, beautiful, and compelling vision of womanhood. By Carrie Gress For decades, Roe v. Wade stood as the legal Goliath against which pro-lifers battled. Few of us believed that we would see the end of its grip on America. And then it was overturned. We rejoiced and still rejoice at the end of Roe’s legal stranglehold on our great country. But its removal has uncovered something not everyone anticipated. The cultural underbelly of our nation has been revealed, and it isn’t pretty. Compared with 2020, abortion is up by about 10 percent nationwide, despite limits put upon it by 20 states since the end of Roe. In other states, such as my home state of Oregon, abortion clinics are quickly being built i...
