Former CFO of Wyoming Catholic College accused of $15 million fraud scam…

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated. LANDER, Wyoming — The $10-million donation from an anonymous donor was the largest gift in the history of Wyoming Catholic College, and school leaders looked forward to using the funds to expand facilities at the campus in downtown Lander, located in the central part of the state. But as architectural plans were completed, with the goal of starting construction by summer’s end, Wyoming Catholic College president Glenn Arbery learned that the school’s CFO, Paul McCown, faced allegations of fraud, and the claim raised questions about the origins and legality of the large donation that had stirred such hopes. On July 7, the college posted a statement addressing the full consequences of information brought to light in a June 22 lawsuit filed ag...

St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks…

St. Kateri is the patron of Native Americans and people in exile, as well as patron of ecology and the environment. Her feast day is July 14. When I was in elementary school, my parents splurged on a membership to the Catholic Youth Book Club. I was an avid reader, and we lived quite a distance from the library — so each month I’d thrill to tear open the box which arrived in our mailbox, and to reveal the new hardcover biography of one of the saints. I collected the books on a shelf beside my bed, and I read them over and over: adventures of great missionaries, heroic martyrs, and noble young women. One of my favorites was Kateri Tekakwitha: Lily of the Mohawks. Around the same time, my grandparents gave me an Indian doll with tiny beaded necklace, and I named the doll “Kateri” — which was...

Pope Francis returns home to Vatican after colon surgery…

On his way home, the Pope stopped to pray at the Basilica of St. Mary Major. VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis has returned to the Vatican after spending 11 days in a Rome hospital to recover from colon surgery. The Vatican said July 14 that Pope Francis was discharged from Gemelli Hospital shortly after 10:30 a.m. Rome time and left the hospital to return to his Vatican residence by car. On his way home, the Pope stopped to pray at the Basilica of St. Mary Major. According to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, the pope visited the Marian icon Salus Populi Romani, before which he “expressed his gratitude for the success of his surgery and offered a prayer for all the sick, especially those he had met during his stay in hospital.” The pope arrived at the Santa Marta guesthouse where he lives shortly...

Simone Biles and other Catholic Olympic athletes to be barred from Tokyo churches due to COVID-19…

ROME – As Tokyo readies to welcome thousands of the world’s top athletes later this month for the Olympics, the local archbishop has announced that “regrettably” no Catholic parish will be able to welcome them due to the spread of COVID-19, as the Japanese city is once again in a state of emergency. The Olympic games, originally scheduled for 2020, will run July 23 to Aug. 8. Close to 10,000 athletes will compete in the international multi-sport event and several thousand more in the para-Olympic games, set to begin in Aug. 24. Though not every athlete speaks openly about their faith, there are several, including some from TeamUSA, who have referred to their Catholic faith as something they lean on, including one of the greatest female gymnasts of all times, Simone Biles, who two years ago...

With the Pope staying longer in the hospital, is this the part where we panic?

ROME – In many ways, Pope Francis had a great weekend. His native Argentina defeated their hated rivals Brazil to win the Latin American soccer championship on Saturday, and the next night his adopted home of Italy triumphed over England for the European title in a thrilling game that ended in a shootout. His work week, on the other stand, started on a slightly more sour note. Monday brought news that his stay in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital following surgery last Sunday for a colon condition is going to last a bit longer than expected. Originally the Vatican said he was expected to remain a week, which was up on Sunday, then said Monday that he’ll be there a “few more days” in order to “optimize medical and rehabilitative therapy.” So far, most people have seemed willing to take the Vatican’s ...

What’s behind Monday’s false rumors about Pope Francis resigning “in the next few hours?”…

The Pope is currently hospitalized after undergoing a surgery July 4 to remove part of his colon, fueling reports that health reasons could have prompted Francis to take this step. VATICAN CITY — Rumors started to fly around social media Monday claiming that Pope Francis was “likely” to resign from the papacy “in the next few hours.” The Pope is currently hospitalized after undergoing a surgery July 4 to remove part of his colon, fueling reports that health reasons could have prompted Francis to take this step. In fact, there is no sign that Pope Francis intends to resign soon. And the confusing reports are probably explained by a mistranslation of Italian into English. The initial social media reports of a pending papal resignation cited a July 12 post by the popular Italian Catholic news...

July is the month of the Most Precious Hemoglobin…

First, the biochemistry lesson. Even the most basic biological facts about human blood are stunning. The average human body is less than ten percent blood, about a gallon and a half total. Yet in a single day, for a person with a weight of about a hundred fifty pounds, the heart beats about a hundred thousand times to pump almost two thousand gallons of blood through a vascular system of vessels, arteries, and capillaries that would stretch around the globe at least twice! Blood is not just sitting in the body, as it may seem when we cut our arm or something; blood is flowing through very defined channels with a very defined purpose. Blood is a suspension of cells, sticky and thick. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are suspended in plasma that contains water, proteins, car...

“Because Haiti,” and unraveling a Vatican mystery…

Hey everybody, It’s the Tuesday Pillar Post.  The News  Less than one week ago, the president of Haiti was assassinated at his home, reportedly by a group of Columbian ex-military security contractors (or mercenaries, depending on who you ask).  President Jovenel Moïse was tortured before he died, and his wife was shot three times and is now being treated in a Miami hospital. The assassination is the latest escalation in a series of political travails that have crippled Haiti’s government in recent months, handing over power in the streets — especially in Port-au-Prince — to violent criminal gangs. With a now-dead president, uncertainty about who has a legitimate claim to power, and with the backdrop of Haiti’s long-term poverty, the country is on the brink of total disaster...

What’s a TLM, anyway? A Latin liturgy lexicon…

Pope St. Paul VI offers the first Mass in Italian, March 7, 1965. public domain. Rome has been full of reports in recent weeks predicting that Pope Francis will soon modify the norms of Summorum pontificum, a 2007 document which granted wide latitude for priests to celebrate the “Extraordinary Form” of the liturgy. It remains to be seen when the pope will approve any changes to the current norms, or what the potential changes could be.  In the meantime, at least some Catholics find themselves a bit confused by terms like the “Ordinary Form” and the “Traditional Latin Mass,” and even more confused trying to keep straight the FSSP, the SSPX, and the other acronyms and jargon that tend to pop up in this conversation. To help you navigate the coverage, and to make sure you know your ars f...

Pope receives pectoral cross made of wood from Chilean church burned in protests…

ROME – Minutes before being hospitalized for intestinal surgery on Sunday, Pope Francis was given a pectoral cross made from wooden remains of a church in Chile destroyed by arson last year during street protests. “There was a very strong and significant social outburst in Chile, with many reactions and violence,” said Bishop Alberto Lorenzelli, explaining the origin of the cross. “Some churches were burnt down during the protests, including the church of the Assumption. Young people from the Catholic University collected the remains of burnt wood and they made the pectoral cross, as a relic they wanted to give to the Holy Father,” he said. The bishop spoke with Crux over the phone on Thursday, from a hotel room where he’s been staying since flying back to Santiago, Chile’s capital, where ...
