GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Staff Writer assists the CNA’s editors by quickly researching, contacting sources and writing articles in accordance with CNA’s style. The writer will also coordinate various tasks related to providing or adapting content for other audio or video platforms.
LOCATION: Remote (Denver, CO preferred)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Produces original news for Catholic News Agency by researching topics, contacting relevant sources, conducting interviews and writing articles.
• Generates new ideas and pitches to editors.
• Obtains relevant photos, graphics or videos when applicable.
• Conducts research, consults experts for background, develops a network of sources and contacts, and conducts interviews as appropriate.
• Completes quick write-ups.
• Adapts content to audio or video platforms.
• Helps with weekend editing and posting when necessary.
• Meets assigned deadlines for assignments.
• Attends meetings/calls and collaborates with the team as required.
• Other duties as assigned.
WHAT SKILLS/TALENTS WILL THE IDEAL CANDIDATE POSSESS?
• Strong writing skills and journalistic knowledge.
• Practicing Catholic with demonstrated understanding of the Catholic Church and relevant topics.
• Prior experience in journalism or communications.
• Excellent ability to communicate internally and across different technological platforms.
• Ability to research background information properly.
• Self-motivated, flexible, excellent communication skills.
• Ability to receive and implement feedback.
• Written proficiency in the English language, with firm grasp on grammar, usage and syntax.
• Good organizational skills, ability to write quickly and meet required deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant computer programs.
• Flexibility in hours to meet news deadlines as necessary.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
• Undergraduate degree in English, Journalism Communication or other relevant field required.
