“You will be a millionaire next week!” Good news right? But how about, “You won’t live past the age of 35.” That’s a bit more scary. But you don’t get this message in the hospital, but from a fortune teller. And what do you do with this prediction for the future? Predicting the future is something that has been done for centuries. From a fortune teller with her crystal ball at the fair, to a psychic who reads tarot cards online. The ways in which people predict the future seem endless.
Cultures also differ in their ways of predicting the future. For example, Romanian witches read about the future in wheat grains or your palm. In Russia, the future is predicted by dripping molten lead, tin or beeswax into water. They all think they can make an accurate prediction about the future. Sometimes that prediction seems to come true. But has that been a good guess or can they actually see the future? It is unreliable, because often enough a prediction comes true half or not at all. Fortune tellers sometimes even contradict each other.
The Bible and the Future
God told people several times what was going to happen in their lives. One of those people was Mary, the mother of Jesus. God shared something special about her future.
“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Jesus himself often told things about the future. He knew, for example, in advance which of his followers would betray him on Maundy Thursday. So not all the things he said about the future were nice, but they did come true. In dire situations, Jesus sometimes shared something about the future too. That could be astonishingly beautiful. When he hung on the cross, he also told the criminal who hung on the cross next to him about his future; he would be in paradise with Jesus after his death.
God’s future promises to you
“Huh?” you may think. “Does God Have Promises for Me?” For sure! The Bible contains a lot of future promises that were said to people long ago, but that also apply to you. There are far too many to write here, but I have made a selection of some beautiful promises. Just look through it calmly and let yourself be encouraged.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.
Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
