This Captain America quote will inspire you in these days following the election…

Captain America is a fascinating character in the Marvel Universe, often described as the “Man Out of Time.” He doesn’t belong to the modern world and continually fights for, “Truth, justice and the American way.”

For the most part, this has stayed consistent over the years in the multitude of ways he has been written in comics and movies.

One particular stirring quotation that was featured in the movie, Captain America: Civil War, was first seen in Amazing Spider-Man #537 (by J. Michael Straczynski, Ron Garney and Scott Hanna). Captain America is giving Spider-Man a pep talk and delivers the following speech.

Doesn’t matter what the press says. Doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — “No, you move.”

Interestingly, it is a variation of a quote from Mark Twain.

Let men label you as they may, if you alone of all the nation decide one way, and that way be the right way by your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country, hold up your head for you have nothing to be ashamed of.

It doesn’t matter what the press says. It doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. It doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. Republics are founded on one principle above all else: The requirement that we stand up for what we believe in. no matter the odds or consequences.

When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move. Your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth and tell the whole world:

“No, you move.”

In the movie, it is Sharon Carter who gives the speech, though it motivates Captain America in the choices he makes for the rest of the film.

It is an inspiring speech, one that we should all heed.

May we do as Captain America and “plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth.”

No matter what happens on election day, don’t move away from that fountain of truth, no “matter what the politicians or the mobs say.”

Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of its street. On either side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there anymore. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will look upon his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever and ever
